For Mohenjo Daro, it is now a matter of collecting whatever best that can come its way. It has already lost its weekend advantage by bringing in just 30.54 crore, what with Sunday fetching only 12.07 crore. Now it would be hoping that at least 12 crore more come in today due to Independence Day holiday. That would push it further towards the 50 crore mark before the close of Week One.
However, this isn’t something that Ashutosh Gowariker, Hrithik Roshan and everyone else associated with the film would have bargained for when they embarked on the two year long project. When the budget is so huge and the stakes are ultra high, you aim for nothing less than a Blockbuster. In the past, Hrithik has given biggies like Bang Bang and Krrish 3 which have gone past the 150 crore mark. He also has a biggie like Agneepath to his credit and has demonstrated time and again that he has the kind of magnetism that pulls audiences into theaters. However, the poor show of Mohenjo Daro has been an aberration.
One now waits to see where does Mohenjo Daro eventually end up at. Back in 2008, Hrithik Roshan and Ashutosh Gowariker had come together for Jodhaa Akbar. The film had collected 62 crore.
Even if one doesn’t adjust the numbers for ticket rates and inflation, the first target for Mohenjo Daro would be cross the lifetime of the historical drama at the least. If even that doesn’t turn out to be possible, it would be a major setback for all who came together to give so much to the film which just didn’t manage to find connect with the audiences.
