Box Office Releases This Week: Looks like we will be witnessing another dull week this Friday. There no new big releases scheduled this Friday, with Avengers: Infinity War releasing next week. On a positive note, this is good news for films like October and Baaghi 2, which will definitely see some gains in their collections for the week.
This week we see release of two comparatively small films – Majid Majidi’s Beyond The Clouds and Abhay Deol’s Nanu Ki Jaanu. Both movies have their target audience and only Nanu Ki Jaanu has the chance to please the single screen public. Even if the word of mouth is excellent for both of them, people still will think twice to appear in huge numbers for the films.
This bleak Friday is reminiscent of the first few weeks of January earlier this year. With films failing at the box office one after the other, it looked like a rerun of 2017, with only Salman Khan starrer Tiger Zinda Hai doing good business. The string of failures was broken by Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat which released on January 25 and became a success grossing over 300 crores, bringing hope for filmmakers. Let’s hope that the Marvel superhero flick has the same effect at the box office. With no big Bollywood movies releasing until next month, it has a great opportunity to rake in the collection for a few weeks.
Overall, 2018 has been a good year for Bollywood so far, especially when compared to 2017. After Padmaavat, films like Raid and PadMan had a great performance at the box office, with the former crossing 100 crores. Baaghi 2 amazed us all, crossing the 200 crore like it was nothing. However, the biggest surprise of 2018 was definitely Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Made on a small budget without any A-list actors, the film had a glorious run at the box office, joining the 100 crore club and becoming the most profitable film of 2018.
After Avengers: Infinity War, Raazi will be releasing on May 11,featuring Alia Bhat and Vicky Kaushal in leading roles. Following that, Kareena Kapoor Khan will be making her Bollywood comeback in Veere Di Wedding, and Salman Khan will be seen on the big screen in one of the most awaited films of the year, Race 3.
